Duet with my Grandmother, 2022, 4k Video, 13:31
Duet with my Grandmother centres on a home video from 1991 of the artist's grandmother singing The Rose of Aranmore. Smith travelled to Donegal in Ireland to sing her half of the duet in the ruins of the house her grandmother was born in. This journey became a sort of pilgrimage in an attempt to connect with her Grandmother who died from Alzheimer's when Smith was young. With this knowledge the film becomes a tender attempt to piece together and re-member the memories that her grandmother lost to Alzhemiers. The film muddies time through collaging together new and old super 8 film, alongside 4K footage, and is loosely arranged into two halves: The first half is a portrait of the landscape of her ancestors, the second half is a timeless duet that brings together her grandmother's voice from 1991 and Smiths own voice 30 years later.
