Crying with my Family, 2022, 4k Video, 09:52

Crying with my Family questions the authenticity of emotion as well as the roles we perform within the complex dynamics in our families. The film is set in the artist's family home, Smith is joined around the kitchen table by her brother and parents. The static camera shot of this domestic setting and the use of light speaks to a traditional painterly language. It is clear the artist is setting up the situation and giving her family instructions to be acted out in front of the camera. They begin to follow the direction to cut onions, as the film goes on they start to produce tears and silently cry around the kitchen table. Whilst it is clear to the audience that these are not ‘real’ tears, the work oscillates between absurdity, a performative act, finding a way to cry together, and an intimate moment of collective sadness.
